Start with rough and ugly!

This backyard was utilitarian and unfinished. A vegetable garden plot had gone to weeds and had to be tilled under. The landscape contained little green and no accent foliage color. There was little or no invitation to enjoy the outdoors.

The garden shed, occupying a large part of the available space, dominated all sight lines with its harsh boxiness.

Existing fencing was acceptable but offered no visual relief from the flat angular dominance of the garden shed.

We decide to break up the yard's harsh outline with a variety of border plantings. We sacrificed a good amount of valuable space in order to install various profile plants.

Wide, narrow and tall, heavy leafed, woody stemmed, multi-colored plants of various heights fill a wide planting area around the entire yard.

To avoid it looking like a rigid planting bed we sculpt the edges with contours from the lawn and stone walkway so that border plantings seem to meander through the yard in evocative sensual curves.

Paint on the garden shed picks up colors from walkway and plants. Natural hues of green and red climb off the ground and incorporate the shed into the landscape.

Constantly curving walkway, lawn span, and planting areas soften the structural solidity of the shed.

Nature returns to this backyard. Landscaping becomes living space, inviting residents to occupy this space, absorb nature's beauty, and till the soil.

What was once a failed vegetable garden is now a true delight.

Now each existing tree has become a featured specimen. Shade alternates with sun to help define entertainment areas and quiet nooks.

The low, flat landscape profile is retained so as to maximize usable space. The yard is made visually interesting by use of an attractive color scheme that arises directly from the plantings. Natural stone lends texture while offering a serviceable, durable traffic surface.

Guests are drawn immediately to the center of the yard where there is room to gather and converse. The new landscape becomes an extension of the home, another "room" in which to live and entertain.

Beauty and utility combine in an inviting landscape that connects all major features of this home.

Nature reenters as the new plantings entice birds and wildlife to thrive.
